Sir Grayson Perry
Client: Create London
Artist: Sir Grayson Perry
We were commissioned by Create London to fabricate a public sculpture for Sir Grayson Perry. Following an initial consultation, we received hand drawn sketches from the artist depicting his childhood home, garden, and car, reimagined as a street lamp for a housing development in Dagenham.
Using these sketches, we produced a detailed card model, delivered to the artist for feedback and refinement. The brief was for the sculpture to feel as though it had been made in someone’s back garden, so each component was meticulously cut by hand using die grinders and finished with files. The elements were TIG welded together, creating a seamless finish.
We collaborated closely with a lighting engineer and electrician to wire the interior of the house, ensuring it automatically illuminates every evening at 6pm. Once the steelwork was complete, the sculpture was delivered to the artist for painting. After painting, we installed the piece on site and continue to be responsible for its maintenance and repair.
This project demonstrates our ability to work from rough sketches and translate artistic vision into durable, public-facing works. Through ongoing consultation, we preserve the authenticity and agency of the artist while delivering bespoke finishes that meet regulatory and structural requirements. We always work with structural engineers on public commissions and produce high-quality work guaranteed for its intended lifespan.
