Women in metalwork

When Daniela Rubino and Lauren Wilson first met in a shared workshop, they quickly bonded over a shared frustration: the lack of inclusivity within the industry. That conversation became the foundation for a series of women‑only workshops.

During previous teaching sessions, Lauren and Daniela were often asked, “Where’s the teacher?”—a question that revealed the assumptions and biases still deeply embedded in the field. Creating a space where women and LGBTQ+ individuals could feel safe, respected, and comfortable became central to their mission.

As ORE has grown over the years, the Goldsmiths’ Centre has continued to fund these placements, which now range from one‑day and weekend courses to evening classes. Every student is encouraged to explore their potential and develop confidence in their craft.

The network of remarkable individuals who have taken part in these workshops now forms the backbone of Metal Share, a monthly online meeting space for anyone working in metal, with a particular focus on problem‑solving around sexism and unconscious bias in the industry.

The next series of Women and LGBTQ+ workshops will take place in May and June 2026. If you would like to be added to our waiting list, please send us an email.
